Narrative:
About over okk VOR we were at FL220 and a target appeared at about 10 O'clock. His altitude showed -27 climbing and a TA occurred. At -24 climbing an RA occurred. Autoplt was disconnected and a climb was started to comply with RA. Climb was stopped when 'clear of conflict' was heard and 'behind' showed on TCASII screen. Maximum altitude achieved was 22450 ft. Returned to FL220. We had just switched from ZID to ZAU. Traffic was not called out to us by either center. ZAU said to us (after we reported RA and subsequent altitude deviation) that the traffic was climbing to FL210. Supplemental information from acn 221937: the intruder was apparently climbing rapidly up to FL210 in our 10:30 position. ATC did not report this traffic to us and were IMC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION DURING EVASIVE ACTION CLB.
Narrative: ABOUT OVER OKK VOR WE WERE AT FL220 AND A TARGET APPEARED AT ABOUT 10 O'CLOCK. HIS ALT SHOWED -27 CLBING AND A TA OCCURRED. AT -24 CLBING AN RA OCCURRED. AUTOPLT WAS DISCONNECTED AND A CLB WAS STARTED TO COMPLY WITH RA. CLB WAS STOPPED WHEN 'CLR OF CONFLICT' WAS HEARD AND 'BEHIND' SHOWED ON TCASII SCREEN. MAX ALT ACHIEVED WAS 22450 FT. RETURNED TO FL220. WE HAD JUST SWITCHED FROM ZID TO ZAU. TFC WAS NOT CALLED OUT TO US BY EITHER CTR. ZAU SAID TO US (AFTER WE RPTED RA AND SUBSEQUENT ALTDEV) THAT THE TFC WAS CLBING TO FL210. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 221937: THE INTRUDER WAS APPARENTLY CLBING RAPIDLY UP TO FL210 IN OUR 10:30 POS. ATC DID NOT RPT THIS TFC TO US AND WERE IMC.
