Narrative:

Aircraft at 35000 ft going over the tops of a line of thunderstorms. Got larger airspeed and mach changes -- .880 to .790. Maximum continuous needed to keep .790. #3 engine made 3 loud pops and quit. Temperature went to 900 degrees. Forced to descend to 27000 ft due to turbulence. Restarted #3. Began diversion to yyt. When engine quit we were well west of our first etp. After restarting #3 talking with our dispatch we elected to continue back to bos due to fuel and WX conditions. Bos was clear and so was the route back to bos. When we left track yankee, we turned north and got 30 mi off track. Then turned west and proceeded direct to yyt. Of course, we declared an emergency the minute #3 quit.
