Narrative:

This model aircraft is one of the oldest in our air carrier fleet. It is extremely noisy, has a poor audio system, and a typically unbalanced audio amplifier. Typically, the captain's side is very loud and the copilot is low at full volume. In cruise flight, captain flying, first officer on radios. The captain and first officer were engaged in conversation and (apparently) missed a frequency change. After a period of non-communication, the captain turned up the squelch and continued to monitor. After a few mins we heard an air carrier aircraft on frequency, but did not hear ATC respond. The captain asked air carrier aircraft to relay to center our need for another frequency. We were assigned 124.07. We made contact on that frequency and were immediately assigned another frequency. ZJX advised that there was 'no problem' with the miscom. Supplemental information from acn 226397: we were informed we had been 'no radio' for about 200 mi.

THE CAPT AND FO WERE ENGAGED IN CONVERSATION AND (APPARENTLY) MISSED A FREQ CHANGE. AFTER A PERIOD OF NON-COM, THE CAPT TURNED UP THE SQUELCH AND CONTINUED TO MONITOR. AFTER A FEW MINS WE HEARD AN ACR ACFT ON FREQ, BUT DID NOT HEAR ATC RESPOND. THE CAPT ASKED ACR ACFT TO RELAY TO CTR OUR NEED FOR ANOTHER FREQ. WE WERE ASSIGNED 124.07. WE MADE CONTACT ON THAT FREQ AND WERE IMMEDIATELY ASSIGNED ANOTHER FREQ. ZJX ADVISED THAT THERE WAS 'NO PROBLEM' WITH THE MISCOM.
