Narrative:
Was told to taxi onto runway 28 and hold short of runway 23L, while awaiting takeoff clearance for runway 23L. Runway 28 intersects runway 23L and runway 23R at cle. Taxi from ramp via Z onto runway 28 and pulled up close to 23L and stopped. Tower advised we had xed hold short line for runway 23L. From our position at the time, I would say the 23L hold short line must have been in the middle of runway 28. During the taxi, between watching for signs to insure correct taxi and watching for ground and air traffic, I never saw the hold short line. The airport charts do not show enough detail indicating where the line is located; I believe they should, in this case, or traffic should be held short of 28 and 23L, so that by holding short of runway 23L you're not parked in the middle of runway 28. I should have been more alert, but I don't normally expect to find hold short lines in the middle of an active runway. If this is necessary, more information should emphasize the location of the hold short line.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF ACR MLG ACFT INADVERTENTLY PASSED THE RWY 'HOLD SHORT LINE' DURING TAXI TO THE TKOF RWY.
Narrative: WAS TOLD TO TAXI ONTO RWY 28 AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23L, WHILE AWAITING TKOF CLRNC FOR RWY 23L. RWY 28 INTERSECTS RWY 23L AND RWY 23R AT CLE. TAXI FROM RAMP VIA Z ONTO RWY 28 AND PULLED UP CLOSE TO 23L AND STOPPED. TWR ADVISED WE HAD XED HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 23L. FROM OUR POS AT THE TIME, I WOULD SAY THE 23L HOLD SHORT LINE MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE MIDDLE OF RWY 28. DURING THE TAXI, BTWN WATCHING FOR SIGNS TO INSURE CORRECT TAXI AND WATCHING FOR GND AND AIR TFC, I NEVER SAW THE HOLD SHORT LINE. THE ARPT CHARTS DO NOT SHOW ENOUGH DETAIL INDICATING WHERE THE LINE IS LOCATED; I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD, IN THIS CASE, OR TFC SHOULD BE HELD SHORT OF 28 AND 23L, SO THAT BY HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 23L YOU'RE NOT PARKED IN THE MIDDLE OF RWY 28. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ALERT, BUT I DON'T NORMALLY EXPECT TO FIND HOLD SHORT LINES IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ACTIVE RWY. IF THIS IS NECESSARY, MORE INFO SHOULD EMPHASIZE THE LOCATION OF THE HOLD SHORT LINE.
