Narrative:
Aircraft took runway for takeoff roll 28L sfo-hnl. Captain centered aircraft, position and hold. Tower gave takeoff clearance. Captain gave aircraft to first officer, his leg. I thought brakes had been set. Did quick check around cockpit. Didn't notice brakes. Stepped on brakes to release. Brakes were not set. Airplane had started moving slightly 1-2 KTS. Unnoticeable outside. Aircraft stopped immediately and hard. Jolted everybody awake. Did quick check and continued takeoff roll with no further problems. Flight to hnl was normal. Briefed crew and told passenger what had occurred. Cause: lack of good communication/cockpit resource management between captain/first officer. Uneventful flight but scary situation because of abruptness of stop. Scared some passenger. Thought we had been hit or rolled over something. Possible factors: crew flying many night flts, red-eyes, body fatigue. Missed attention to minor details that could have caused more serious troubles.
