Narrative:
Air carrier X on localizer runway 9L fll 170 KTS 4000 ft tracking inbound were asked if we saw traffic Y ahead 3 mi on localizer. We stated we could not identify due to clouds in the area. Few minutes went by then ATC told us to slow to 150 KTS descend to 2000 ft cleared for the approach. We were already above GS when cleared for approach. Next, the controller (new controller) asked if we saw traffic Y 11 O'clock and a mi. We stated no. He then turned us off localizer. We then saw the traffic Y, increased our bank to avoid, missed by about 200 ft. Supplemental information from acn 236138: ATC instructed us to slow to 150 KTS descend to 2000 ft and cleared for ILS 9L fll. We were well above GS. The supervising controller then instructed us to turn to heading 060 degrees due to traffic 1 mi ahead at 4000 ft. We turned to 060 degrees and traffic passed us on right side approximately 200 ft distance. We were held high and slowed down to accommodate an aircraft being turned onto the localizer ahead of us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X HAD NMAC LTSS FROM Y. SYS ERROR.
Narrative: ACR X ON LOC RWY 9L FLL 170 KTS 4000 FT TRACKING INBOUND WERE ASKED IF WE SAW TFC Y AHEAD 3 MI ON LOC. WE STATED WE COULD NOT IDENT DUE TO CLOUDS IN THE AREA. FEW MINUTES WENT BY THEN ATC TOLD US TO SLOW TO 150 KTS DSND TO 2000 FT CLRED FOR THE APCH. WE WERE ALREADY ABOVE GS WHEN CLRED FOR APCH. NEXT, THE CTLR (NEW CTLR) ASKED IF WE SAW TFC Y 11 O'CLOCK AND A MI. WE STATED NO. HE THEN TURNED US OFF LOC. WE THEN SAW THE TFC Y, INCREASED OUR BANK TO AVOID, MISSED BY ABOUT 200 FT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 236138: ATC INSTRUCTED US TO SLOW TO 150 KTS DSND TO 2000 FT AND CLRED FOR ILS 9L FLL. WE WERE WELL ABOVE GS. THE SUPERVISING CTLR THEN INSTRUCTED US TO TURN TO HDG 060 DEGS DUE TO TFC 1 MI AHEAD AT 4000 FT. WE TURNED TO 060 DEGS AND TFC PASSED US ON R SIDE APPROX 200 FT DISTANCE. WE WERE HELD HIGH AND SLOWED DOWN TO ACCOMMODATE AN ACFT BEING TURNED ONTO THE LOC AHEAD OF US.
