Narrative:
Copilot position filed by company instructor pilot. Instructor pilot was working the radios. Navy tower had us back taxi on the runway to position and hold. Instructor pilot was talking to our company on tactical frequency. I finished takeoff checklist and instructor pilot said let's go. I asked are we cleared. He said yes. 1/2 through takeoff roll, tower said we were not cleared for takeoff. We aborted and taxied back to try again, after brakes cooled. Lesson: both crew should monitor critical radio xmissions, and if in doubt, call for verification. It's easy. Also, pre takeoff is not the time to get involved in non ATC radio communications.
