Narrative:
Our flight received pre-departure clearance via ACARS for runway 13 departure, maspeth climb (right 175 degrees then right 340 degree). I read back clearance but inadvertently read back a whitestone climb (right 175 degrees then left 040 degree). My first officer did not catch the error and we briefed a whitestone climb. We discovered the error when departure control gave us a right turn as we were already in a left turn towards 040 degrees (ATC gave 320 degrees). We asked ATC to verify the turn and ATC asked us to verify our departure clearance when we discovered the mistake. ATC seemed unconcerned apparently because the WX and late hour made for little traffic in the area. No conflicts occurred or were reported.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF LGT ACR ACFT INADVERTENTLY TURNED THE WRONG WAY DURING DEP CLB CAUSING ATC TO INTERVENE.
Narrative: OUR FLT RECEIVED PRE-DEP CLRNC VIA ACARS FOR RWY 13 DEP, MASPETH CLB (R 175 DEGS THEN R 340 DEG). I READ BACK CLRNC BUT INADVERTENTLY READ BACK A WHITESTONE CLB (R 175 DEGS THEN L 040 DEG). MY FO DID NOT CATCH THE ERROR AND WE BRIEFED A WHITESTONE CLB. WE DISCOVERED THE ERROR WHEN DEP CTL GAVE US A R TURN AS WE WERE ALREADY IN A L TURN TOWARDS 040 DEGS (ATC GAVE 320 DEGS). WE ASKED ATC TO VERIFY THE TURN AND ATC ASKED US TO VERIFY OUR DEP CLRNC WHEN WE DISCOVERED THE MISTAKE. ATC SEEMED UNCONCERNED APPARENTLY BECAUSE THE WX AND LATE HR MADE FOR LITTLE TFC IN THE AREA. NO CONFLICTS OCCURRED OR WERE RPTED.
