Narrative:
VFR takeoff runway 28 msy. 7310 ft available, cutback west end. Gear just retracted, climbing through 600-800 ft TCASII advisory for traffic goes off. Screen on 10 mi scale shows traffic now 600 ft above between 11-12 O'clock approximately 3-4 mi. I leveled off immediately with flaps still at 11 degrees and override autothrottles by holding back throttles by hand. Now at 1200 ft MSL the traffic comes overhead at 300 ft, dead center to the TCASII screen. No RA. While this was happening. The first officer had asked tower about conflicting traffic and stated we were leveling off for a TCASII warning (we were cleared to 6000 ft). As traffic passed overhead (we never saw it), it exited at about my 4 O'clock position, ATC said we had traffic 'off our right at 1500 ft.' we had taken off into the path of traffic at 1500 ft MSL, cleared to 6000 ft by msy tower, with no clue until TCASII alerted us. I don't know what would have happened if I had tried to climb direct to 6000 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF MLG ACR ACFT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII DURING INITIAL CLBOUT AFTER TKOF RESULTING IN A NMAC.
Narrative: VFR TKOF RWY 28 MSY. 7310 FT AVAILABLE, CUTBACK W END. GEAR JUST RETRACTED, CLBING THROUGH 600-800 FT TCASII ADVISORY FOR TFC GOES OFF. SCREEN ON 10 MI SCALE SHOWS TFC NOW 600 FT ABOVE BTWN 11-12 O'CLOCK APPROX 3-4 MI. I LEVELED OFF IMMEDIATELY WITH FLAPS STILL AT 11 DEGS AND OVERRIDE AUTOTHROTTLES BY HOLDING BACK THROTTLES BY HAND. NOW AT 1200 FT MSL THE TFC COMES OVERHEAD AT 300 FT, DEAD CTR TO THE TCASII SCREEN. NO RA. WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING. THE FO HAD ASKED TWR ABOUT CONFLICTING TFC AND STATED WE WERE LEVELING OFF FOR A TCASII WARNING (WE WERE CLRED TO 6000 FT). AS TFC PASSED OVERHEAD (WE NEVER SAW IT), IT EXITED AT ABOUT MY 4 O'CLOCK POS, ATC SAID WE HAD TFC 'OFF OUR R AT 1500 FT.' WE HAD TAKEN OFF INTO THE PATH OF TFC AT 1500 FT MSL, CLRED TO 6000 FT BY MSY TWR, WITH NO CLUE UNTIL TCASII ALERTED US. I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD TRIED TO CLB DIRECT TO 6000 FT.
