Narrative:
Aircraft 1 (small aircraft a) flew south along shoreline passing aircraft 2. Both aircraft at 1000-1200 ft MSL below TCA (1500 ft). Aircraft small aircraft a turned left behind aircraft 2, an unknown small aircraft B. Aircraft small aircraft a, flew in circles behind aircraft small aircraft B, at approximately 2000-3000 ft. Both aircraft were circling and viewing ground and flight activity at torrey pines glider port. As lead aircraft (small aircraft B) varied speed and direction, small aircraft a aircraft varied speed and direction also to maintain distance and keep in view. When small aircraft a aircraft turned left and descended away from circling pattern to leave area, small aircraft B aircraft, unidented small aircraft B, dove on small aircraft a aircraft and closed into formation off small aircraft a aircraft right wing. Small aircraft a aircraft made sharp left turn away from small aircraft B to break out of formation and avoid small aircraft B. Small aircraft a then trailed small aircraft B to airport. Small aircraft B aircraft was heard complaining to tower about small aircraft a aircraft's maneuver away from him. No further conflict occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: 2 ACFT CIRCLING, 1 MOVES IN VERY CLOSE AS A FORMATION FLT.
Narrative: ACFT 1 (SMA A) FLEW S ALONG SHORELINE PASSING ACFT 2. BOTH ACFT AT 1000-1200 FT MSL BELOW TCA (1500 FT). ACFT SMA A TURNED L BEHIND ACFT 2, AN UNKNOWN SMA B. ACFT SMA A, FLEW IN CIRCLES BEHIND ACFT SMA B, AT APPROX 2000-3000 FT. BOTH ACFT WERE CIRCLING AND VIEWING GND AND FLT ACTIVITY AT TORREY PINES GLIDER PORT. AS LEAD ACFT (SMA B) VARIED SPD AND DIRECTION, SMA A ACFT VARIED SPD AND DIRECTION ALSO TO MAINTAIN DISTANCE AND KEEP IN VIEW. WHEN SMA A ACFT TURNED L AND DSNDED AWAY FROM CIRCLING PATTERN TO LEAVE AREA, SMA B ACFT, UNIDENTED SMA B, DOVE ON SMA A ACFT AND CLOSED INTO FORMATION OFF SMA A ACFT R WING. SMA A ACFT MADE SHARP L TURN AWAY FROM SMA B TO BREAK OUT OF FORMATION AND AVOID SMA B. SMA A THEN TRAILED SMA B TO ARPT. SMA B ACFT WAS HEARD COMPLAINING TO TWR ABOUT SMA A ACFT'S MANEUVER AWAY FROM HIM. NO FURTHER CONFLICT OCCURRED.
