Narrative:
While acting as first officer of pit-dca flight on may/xx/93, cleared by ATC to descend below 10000 ft MSL (i.e., cross aml at 8000 ft). I instructed the captain, then acting as PNF, to call the flight attendants 'out of 10000 ft.' he stated he was off and would report back on (with me). He returned and replied he told the flight attendants to prepare for arrival. (As required by company and FAA regulations.) then just prior to gear extension I commanded a 3 bell signal to the cabin to alert the flight attendants cleared to land (as per company operations). The captain replied and pushed the buttons on the overhead panel. On landing, the flight attendants had not stored a galley cart and articles were strewn about the cabin. When we got to the gate, the flight attendant in the aft section called the cockpit to tell of the mishap. I asked the captain if he had given the 3 bell signal. He replied positively. On the large transport there are 3 buttons: forward, mid and aft. Forward and aft are normally used. (Flight attendants are seated forward and aft, not in the 'mid' section.) the captain said he pushed the mid button. No flight attendant would have heard this. I was flying and did not get involved with taking my eyes from outside the airplane. I gave the captain a lesson in button pushing.
