Narrative:
Mke tower cleared air carrier X for takeoff on runway 7R climb to 2000 ft MSL turn left to 290 degrees (brew 3 departure), which I read back. Because we were going south to ord, the captain, who was flying, elected to climb at V2 plus 10 KTS (135 KTS) to keep from getting any further out of the way. The problem comes along when another aircraft which departed ahead of us (he rotated as we began our takeoff run) accelerated during his departure so that when we rolled out on our 290 heading he ended up to our right about 2 mi same altitude and heading (other aircraft also had the same departure clearance). The tower was busy with other traffic and didn't send us over to departure. Tower finally sends us over to departure by this time we are out of 4500 MSL to level at 5000 ft flying a 2 mi formation with the medium large transport who is now turning towards us. I advised the captain we better do something about this. Departure control is trying to talk to us as I FLIP the switch to their frequency. The medium large transport was along side us level at 5000 ft turning toward us!! The medium large transport, realizing his flying environment, sees us and turns back to the right departure gives him 7000 ft MSL. I acknowledge we are on the frequency. Level at 5000, 290 degrees on the heading with the medium large transport in sight and we had the medium large transport in sight all the way.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X HAD LESS THAN STANDARD RADAR SEPARATION FROM ACR Y. SYS ERROR.
Narrative: MKE TWR CLRED ACR X FOR TKOF ON RWY 7R CLB TO 2000 FT MSL TURN L TO 290 DEGS (BREW 3 DEP), WHICH I READ BACK. BECAUSE WE WERE GOING S TO ORD, THE CAPT, WHO WAS FLYING, ELECTED TO CLB AT V2 PLUS 10 KTS (135 KTS) TO KEEP FROM GETTING ANY FURTHER OUT OF THE WAY. THE PROB COMES ALONG WHEN ANOTHER ACFT WHICH DEPARTED AHEAD OF US (HE ROTATED AS WE BEGAN OUR TKOF RUN) ACCELERATED DURING HIS DEP SO THAT WHEN WE ROLLED OUT ON OUR 290 HDG HE ENDED UP TO OUR R ABOUT 2 MI SAME ALT AND HDG (OTHER ACFT ALSO HAD THE SAME DEP CLRNC). THE TWR WAS BUSY WITH OTHER TFC AND DIDN'T SEND US OVER TO DEP. TWR FINALLY SENDS US OVER TO DEP BY THIS TIME WE ARE OUT OF 4500 MSL TO LEVEL AT 5000 FT FLYING A 2 MI FORMATION WITH THE MLG WHO IS NOW TURNING TOWARDS US. I ADVISED THE CAPT WE BETTER DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. DEP CTL IS TRYING TO TALK TO US AS I FLIP THE SWITCH TO THEIR FREQ. THE MLG WAS ALONG SIDE US LEVEL AT 5000 FT TURNING TOWARD US!! THE MLG, REALIZING HIS FLYING ENVIRONMENT, SEES US AND TURNS BACK TO THE R DEP GIVES HIM 7000 FT MSL. I ACKNOWLEDGE WE ARE ON THE FREQ. LEVEL AT 5000, 290 DEGS ON THE HDG WITH THE MLG IN SIGHT AND WE HAD THE MLG IN SIGHT ALL THE WAY.
