Narrative:
During descent into sea on the chins arrival we were slowed to 250 KTS and given holding instructions to hold at raddy FL240 east, expect further clearance at XX43. Later on, we were cleared to FL190. I repeated the clearance to descend and hold at FL190. FMC told us that we would arrive at the holding fix after our expect further clearance. The holding fix was entered into the FMC with FL190 expect further clearance XX43. Later, we were cleared to a lower altitude. I repeated the clearance and asked if this 'eliminates the hold' and the controller said (roger/yes?). This gave both of us the impression that the holding was cancelled and we were to continue on the arrival at a reduced speed. 4-5 mi past the fix we were asked if we had entered holding, I said 'negative, you had cancelled the holding.' the controller said turn right 170 degree maintain FL170, which we did. After 1 turn we were cleared on the arrival to sea.

Title: FLC OF AN LGT ACR ACFT FAILED TO 'HOLD' DURING AN ARR DSCNT DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING OF ATC INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: DURING DSCNT INTO SEA ON THE CHINS ARR WE WERE SLOWED TO 250 KTS AND GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD AT RADDY FL240 E, EXPECT FURTHER CLRNC AT XX43. LATER ON, WE WERE CLRED TO FL190. I REPEATED THE CLRNC TO DSND AND HOLD AT FL190. FMC TOLD US THAT WE WOULD ARRIVE AT THE HOLDING FIX AFTER OUR EXPECT FURTHER CLRNC. THE HOLDING FIX WAS ENTERED INTO THE FMC WITH FL190 EXPECT FURTHER CLRNC XX43. LATER, WE WERE CLRED TO A LOWER ALT. I REPEATED THE CLRNC AND ASKED IF THIS 'ELIMINATES THE HOLD' AND THE CTLR SAID (ROGER/YES?). THIS GAVE BOTH OF US THE IMPRESSION THAT THE HOLDING WAS CANCELLED AND WE WERE TO CONTINUE ON THE ARR AT A REDUCED SPD. 4-5 MI PAST THE FIX WE WERE ASKED IF WE HAD ENTERED HOLDING, I SAID 'NEGATIVE, YOU HAD CANCELLED THE HOLDING.' THE CTLR SAID TURN R 170 DEG MAINTAIN FL170, WHICH WE DID. AFTER 1 TURN WE WERE CLRED ON THE ARR TO SEA.
