Narrative:
After pushback at mia, I read back clearance to taxi after large transport passes, to taxi via the outer to 9L. Being busy with checklists and ACARS, etc, I noticed what I thought was going to be a possible crossing of runway 12. I mentioned we don't cross runways en route to 9L. The captain responded saying that he was going to 9L and that the airport was confusing. Attempting to verify the route with both the chart and ground control we entered and crossed runway 12. I was able to check and verify that the runway was visually clear of traffic in both directions. On the other side of runway 12 we were told of our misdeed. I wished that I had been much more aggressive in relaying the fact that we were not to cross runways to 9L even to the point of stopping the aircraft on the taxiway prior to entry of runway 12. The other lesson to be learned is that all other cockpit business be stopped when near runways, with all attention given to aircraft movement. Supplemental information from acn 251503: we were given taxi instructions after pushback from gate to taxi to 9R via 'quebec sierra' behind an large transport. This is what I thought I heard. My copilot acknowledged with a 'roger.' in reality, the clearance was to 9L via 'quebec.' not being real familiar with mia when I 'thought' I heard 'sierra' I assumed 9R and was automatically cleared across all other runways to get there. This was a case where I heard what I was expecting and not what was actually said. This incident could have been avoided in 2 ways. First, my copilot could have questioned my actions earlier. Secondly, ground control might have said something before I crossed as I had to go in the wrong direction for several seconds before reaching the active runway. I'm not blaming anyone for this as it was my error, just critiquing what might have been to avoid this.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RWY INCURSION. UNAUTH RWY ENTRY XING.
Narrative: AFTER PUSHBACK AT MIA, I READ BACK CLRNC TO TAXI AFTER LGT PASSES, TO TAXI VIA THE OUTER TO 9L. BEING BUSY WITH CHKLISTS AND ACARS, ETC, I NOTICED WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GOING TO BE A POSSIBLE XING OF RWY 12. I MENTIONED WE DON'T CROSS RWYS ENRTE TO 9L. THE CAPT RESPONDED SAYING THAT HE WAS GOING TO 9L AND THAT THE ARPT WAS CONFUSING. ATTEMPTING TO VERIFY THE RTE WITH BOTH THE CHART AND GND CTL WE ENTERED AND CROSSED RWY 12. I WAS ABLE TO CHK AND VERIFY THAT THE RWY WAS VISUALLY CLR OF TFC IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 12 WE WERE TOLD OF OUR MISDEED. I WISHED THAT I HAD BEEN MUCH MORE AGGRESSIVE IN RELAYING THE FACT THAT WE WERE NOT TO CROSS RWYS TO 9L EVEN TO THE POINT OF STOPPING THE ACFT ON THE TXWY PRIOR TO ENTRY OF RWY 12. THE OTHER LESSON TO BE LEARNED IS THAT ALL OTHER COCKPIT BUSINESS BE STOPPED WHEN NEAR RWYS, WITH ALL ATTN GIVEN TO ACFT MOVEMENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 251503: WE WERE GIVEN TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AFTER PUSHBACK FROM GATE TO TAXI TO 9R VIA 'QUEBEC SIERRA' BEHIND AN LGT. THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT I HEARD. MY COPLT ACKNOWLEDGED WITH A 'ROGER.' IN REALITY, THE CLRNC WAS TO 9L VIA 'QUEBEC.' NOT BEING REAL FAMILIAR WITH MIA WHEN I 'THOUGHT' I HEARD 'SIERRA' I ASSUMED 9R AND WAS AUTOMATICALLY CLRED ACROSS ALL OTHER RWYS TO GET THERE. THIS WAS A CASE WHERE I HEARD WHAT I WAS EXPECTING AND NOT WHAT WAS ACTUALLY SAID. THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IN 2 WAYS. FIRST, MY COPLT COULD HAVE QUESTIONED MY ACTIONS EARLIER. SECONDLY, GND CTL MIGHT HAVE SAID SOMETHING BEFORE I CROSSED AS I HAD TO GO IN THE WRONG DIRECTION FOR SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE REACHING THE ACTIVE RWY. I'M NOT BLAMING ANYONE FOR THIS AS IT WAS MY ERROR, JUST CRITIQUING WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN TO AVOID THIS.
