Narrative:
Flying an air carrier large transport on the night of oct/sun/93 from slc to yyc, the #3 engine flamed out and a precautionary shutdown was accomplished. The flight returned to slc for maintenance and passenger handling capability. Our first indication of failure was a small yaw and the thrust indicator read '0' as did the fuel flow indicator. The engine continued to windmill. No restart was attempted because we didn't know why it quit. Oil pressure, oil temperature, and oil quantity were all good. The return to slc went without further problem. After examination by maintenance they said that some type of seal let loose. A maintenance report was also filed. Supplemental information from acn 253119: normal descent, approach, and landing completed with emergency equipment standing by. Flight attendants indicated that PA announcements about our status and intentions helped greatly to reduce passenger stress.

Title: AN ACR LGT SHUT DOWN 1 OF 3 ENGS.
Narrative: FLYING AN ACR LGT ON THE NIGHT OF OCT/SUN/93 FROM SLC TO YYC, THE #3 ENG FLAMED OUT AND A PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN WAS ACCOMPLISHED. THE FLT RETURNED TO SLC FOR MAINT AND PAX HANDLING CAPABILITY. OUR FIRST INDICATION OF FAILURE WAS A SMALL YAW AND THE THRUST INDICATOR READ '0' AS DID THE FUEL FLOW INDICATOR. THE ENG CONTINUED TO WINDMILL. NO RESTART WAS ATTEMPTED BECAUSE WE DIDN'T KNOW WHY IT QUIT. OIL PRESSURE, OIL TEMP, AND OIL QUANTITY WERE ALL GOOD. THE RETURN TO SLC WENT WITHOUT FURTHER PROB. AFTER EXAMINATION BY MAINT THEY SAID THAT SOME TYPE OF SEAL LET LOOSE. A MAINT RPT WAS ALSO FILED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 253119: NORMAL DSCNT, APCH, AND LNDG COMPLETED WITH EMER EQUIP STANDING BY. FLT ATTENDANTS INDICATED THAT PA ANNOUNCEMENTS ABOUT OUR STATUS AND INTENTIONS HELPED GREATLY TO REDUCE PAX STRESS.
