Narrative:
My aircraft landed on 28R, other aircraft simultaneously landed on 28L, other aircraft were waiting 'in position' for takeoff on runway 1L and runway 1R. We were part of the line of aircraft landing on 28R. Upon landing, I was cleared to turn off on runway 1 or continue to highspd turnoff. I have turned off on runway 1L which is before highspd turnoff -- judging by the clearance I have received, that there is an aircraft landing close behind me. As I am turning off into runway 1L, an aircraft was cleared for takeoff and immediately takeoff clearance was cancelled for this aircraft on runway 1L. There was no incident and we have then proceeded as instructed to our parking. In debriefing with my crew, we have discovered that every one of us heard different clearance. Causes for misunderstanding: 1) very busy controller speaking very rapidly while we were very busy landing aircraft (reversers, braking, looking for turnoff). 2) improper runway management, i.e., clearing aircraft for takeoff while our aircraft had not cleared the said intersection.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR LGT FREIGHTER TURNED OFF OF THE LNDG RWY ONTO THE ACTIVE TKOF RWY AT NIGHT.
Narrative: MY ACFT LANDED ON 28R, OTHER ACFT SIMULTANEOUSLY LANDED ON 28L, OTHER ACFT WERE WAITING 'IN POS' FOR TKOF ON RWY 1L AND RWY 1R. WE WERE PART OF THE LINE OF ACFT LNDG ON 28R. UPON LNDG, I WAS CLRED TO TURN OFF ON RWY 1 OR CONTINUE TO HIGHSPD TURNOFF. I HAVE TURNED OFF ON RWY 1L WHICH IS BEFORE HIGHSPD TURNOFF -- JUDGING BY THE CLRNC I HAVE RECEIVED, THAT THERE IS AN ACFT LNDG CLOSE BEHIND ME. AS I AM TURNING OFF INTO RWY 1L, AN ACFT WAS CLRED FOR TKOF AND IMMEDIATELY TKOF CLRNC WAS CANCELLED FOR THIS ACFT ON RWY 1L. THERE WAS NO INCIDENT AND WE HAVE THEN PROCEEDED AS INSTRUCTED TO OUR PARKING. IN DEBRIEFING WITH MY CREW, WE HAVE DISCOVERED THAT EVERY ONE OF US HEARD DIFFERENT CLRNC. CAUSES FOR MISUNDERSTANDING: 1) VERY BUSY CTLR SPEAKING VERY RAPIDLY WHILE WE WERE VERY BUSY LNDG ACFT (REVERSERS, BRAKING, LOOKING FOR TURNOFF). 2) IMPROPER RWY MGMNT, I.E., CLRING ACFT FOR TKOF WHILE OUR ACFT HAD NOT CLRED THE SAID INTXN.
