Narrative:
I was fling an medium large transport from atl to sav. ZJX kept us high at 23000. I disconnected autoplt and autothrottles at 23000 (sav approach said can you get down). I said we will handle it through some 360 degree turns. Flew 2 spiral turns to north of extended localizer about 20 mi west of the OM. Intercepted localizer and GS outside of OM on speed, flaps 28. Normal approach and touchdown. As nose was being lowered to runway, the main gear compressed, pushed up and compressed again as the aircraft rolled over the arresting gear housing that crossed runway 9. Simultaneously, nose pitched up suddenly and I felt back pressure on yoke and my right hand deployed the reversers almost as a premature movement resulting from going down, up, down over arresting housing. Looked at attitude indicator, which showed minimum of 7 degrees nose up and I felt I had scrapped buckets as this attitude was entirely too high for buckets to be deployed. Gently lowered nose with very little reverse and remainder of landing roll and braking was normal. Post-flight walkaround revealed damage to both buckets. Dark night, no rcl lights -- my eyes were outside cockpit. The compression of gear, then rolling up over housing and then compression of gear again was very unusual and caused the nose of the aircraft to pitch up probably as I may have had back pressure on yoke as I was riding this porpoise action. I was not ready to deploy reversers, but inertia and my reaction after touchdown cracked the buckets anyway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG ON LNDG CROSSES ARRESTING GEAR HOUSING, EXTENDS REVERSERS WITH NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE. SCRAPES REVERSERS.
Narrative: I WAS FLING AN MLG FROM ATL TO SAV. ZJX KEPT US HIGH AT 23000. I DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND AUTOTHROTTLES AT 23000 (SAV APCH SAID CAN YOU GET DOWN). I SAID WE WILL HANDLE IT THROUGH SOME 360 DEG TURNS. FLEW 2 SPIRAL TURNS TO N OF EXTENDED LOC ABOUT 20 MI WEST OF THE OM. INTERCEPTED LOC AND GS OUTSIDE OF OM ON SPD, FLAPS 28. NORMAL APCH AND TOUCHDOWN. AS NOSE WAS BEING LOWERED TO RWY, THE MAIN GEAR COMPRESSED, PUSHED UP AND COMPRESSED AGAIN AS THE ACFT ROLLED OVER THE ARRESTING GEAR HOUSING THAT CROSSED RWY 9. SIMULTANEOUSLY, NOSE PITCHED UP SUDDENLY AND I FELT BACK PRESSURE ON YOKE AND MY R HAND DEPLOYED THE REVERSERS ALMOST AS A PREMATURE MOVEMENT RESULTING FROM GOING DOWN, UP, DOWN OVER ARRESTING HOUSING. LOOKED AT ATTITUDE INDICATOR, WHICH SHOWED MINIMUM OF 7 DEGS NOSE UP AND I FELT I HAD SCRAPPED BUCKETS AS THIS ATTITUDE WAS ENTIRELY TOO HIGH FOR BUCKETS TO BE DEPLOYED. GENTLY LOWERED NOSE WITH VERY LITTLE REVERSE AND REMAINDER OF LNDG ROLL AND BRAKING WAS NORMAL. POST-FLT WALKAROUND REVEALED DAMAGE TO BOTH BUCKETS. DARK NIGHT, NO RCL LIGHTS -- MY EYES WERE OUTSIDE COCKPIT. THE COMPRESSION OF GEAR, THEN ROLLING UP OVER HOUSING AND THEN COMPRESSION OF GEAR AGAIN WAS VERY UNUSUAL AND CAUSED THE NOSE OF THE ACFT TO PITCH UP PROBABLY AS I MAY HAVE HAD BACK PRESSURE ON YOKE AS I WAS RIDING THIS PORPOISE ACTION. I WAS NOT READY TO DEPLOY REVERSERS, BUT INERTIA AND MY REACTION AFTER TOUCHDOWN CRACKED THE BUCKETS ANYWAY.
