Narrative:
Before takeoff on runway 25R at dab, notified by tower of some birds at opposite end of runway. During or just after liftoff encountered probable bird strike/ingestion to #1 engine. Engine maintained power, operated normally, and showed no abnormal engine instrument indications. However, engine vibration gauge showed fluctuations between 1-4. Vibration was also sensed in first officer control column. Vibration gauge indications reduced during climb out and remained steady between 2-3 during cruise flight. Indications went below 1 during engine idle conditions. Flight continued to destination (clt) normally. Noticed some vibration and noise during reverse thrust on landing. Arrival at gate confirmed bird strike/ingestion to #1 engine and subsequent damage to numerous fan blades. Supplemental information from acn 267067: our departure airport had limited runway length available and the aircraft was currently 7000 pounds in excess of maximum landing weight. Because of the high gross weight and stable engine operation the flight was continued to clt (destination) where an uneventful maximum landing weight landing was accomplished.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FOREIGN OBJECT INGESTION DAMAGE BIRD.
Narrative: BEFORE TKOF ON RWY 25R AT DAB, NOTIFIED BY TWR OF SOME BIRDS AT OPPOSITE END OF RWY. DURING OR JUST AFTER LIFTOFF ENCOUNTERED PROBABLE BIRD STRIKE/INGESTION TO #1 ENG. ENG MAINTAINED PWR, OPERATED NORMALLY, AND SHOWED NO ABNORMAL ENG INST INDICATIONS. HOWEVER, ENG VIBRATION GAUGE SHOWED FLUCTUATIONS BTWN 1-4. VIBRATION WAS ALSO SENSED IN FO CTL COLUMN. VIBRATION GAUGE INDICATIONS REDUCED DURING CLBOUT AND REMAINED STEADY BTWN 2-3 DURING CRUISE FLT. INDICATIONS WENT BELOW 1 DURING ENG IDLE CONDITIONS. FLT CONTINUED TO DEST (CLT) NORMALLY. NOTICED SOME VIBRATION AND NOISE DURING REVERSE THRUST ON LNDG. ARR AT GATE CONFIRMED BIRD STRIKE/INGESTION TO #1 ENG AND SUBSEQUENT DAMAGE TO NUMEROUS FAN BLADES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 267067: OUR DEP ARPT HAD LIMITED RWY LENGTH AVAILABLE AND THE ACFT WAS CURRENTLY 7000 LBS IN EXCESS OF MAX LNDG WT. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH GROSS WT AND STABLE ENG OP THE FLT WAS CONTINUED TO CLT (DEST) WHERE AN UNEVENTFUL MAX LNDG WT LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED.
