Narrative:

Myself and a friend departed st. Cloud, mn, airport en route to kansas city downtown. We received a clearance slot from flight service on the ground at st. Cloud. It included an interim altitude of 4000 ft. We departed in VMC conditions and climbed to 5000 ft. We then contacted center and proceeded to descend to 4000 ft clearance. The controller asked what our initial clearance was and I responded '4000 ft' and we proceeded to level at 4000 ft. Subsequently, I was told to contact center the following monday by telephone.
