Narrative:
Departed mexico city destination guatemala city. Traversing J-13 from izt to tap. Clearance after tap was UR644 to mggt (guatemala city). Approximately 80 NM from tap, determined that a line of thunderstorms from approximately 20 NM north of tap extending to the southeast would necessitate a deviation north of course to reach mggt. Informed merida center of our need to deviation to the north for WX. They approved our request and instructed us to return on course when able. We informed them that we would not be able to rejoin the airway until east of tap. Merida center acknowledged our transmission and instructed us to contact cenamer control abeam tap. (This contact is normally done over tap.) abeam tap we contacted cenamer control with our position report 44 NM north of tap, deviating for WX. Cenamer questioned our position, asked when we would return on course, and requested our aircraft registration number. They had apparently not received information from merida center regarding our cleared deviation off course. To avoid a similar problem in the future, I would attempt to raise the next fir/uta controller at the earliest opportunity (even though not required in this particular area) to personally ensure their knowledge of any WX deviation and ensure off course clearance into their airspace prior to reaching the fir/uta boundary.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ARTCC ARTCC INTERFAC COORD NOT EFFECTED FOR ACR MLG DURING WX AVOIDANCE PROC.
Narrative: DEPARTED MEXICO CITY DEST GUATEMALA CITY. TRAVERSING J-13 FROM IZT TO TAP. CLRNC AFTER TAP WAS UR644 TO MGGT (GUATEMALA CITY). APPROX 80 NM FROM TAP, DETERMINED THAT A LINE OF TSTMS FROM APPROX 20 NM N OF TAP EXTENDING TO THE SE WOULD NECESSITATE A DEV N OF COURSE TO REACH MGGT. INFORMED MERIDA CTR OF OUR NEED TO DEV TO THE N FOR WX. THEY APPROVED OUR REQUEST AND INSTRUCTED US TO RETURN ON COURSE WHEN ABLE. WE INFORMED THEM THAT WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REJOIN THE AIRWAY UNTIL E OF TAP. MERIDA CTR ACKNOWLEDGED OUR XMISSION AND INSTRUCTED US TO CONTACT CENAMER CTL ABEAM TAP. (THIS CONTACT IS NORMALLY DONE OVER TAP.) ABEAM TAP WE CONTACTED CENAMER CTL WITH OUR POS RPT 44 NM N OF TAP, DEVIATING FOR WX. CENAMER QUESTIONED OUR POS, ASKED WHEN WE WOULD RETURN ON COURSE, AND REQUESTED OUR ACFT REGISTRATION NUMBER. THEY HAD APPARENTLY NOT RECEIVED INFO FROM MERIDA CTR REGARDING OUR CLRED DEV OFF COURSE. TO AVOID A SIMILAR PROB IN THE FUTURE, I WOULD ATTEMPT TO RAISE THE NEXT FIR/UTA CTLR AT THE EARLIEST OPPORTUNITY (EVEN THOUGH NOT REQUIRED IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA) TO PERSONALLY ENSURE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF ANY WX DEV AND ENSURE OFF COURSE CLRNC INTO THEIR AIRSPACE PRIOR TO REACHING THE FIR/UTA BOUNDARY.
