Narrative:
While being vectored for ILS 18R approach into memphis airport, approach was abandoned about 10 mi out due to severe thunderstorms at the airport. Vectored west toward large WX buildup. Approaching the edge of the severe WX we heard another aircraft report he was unable to hold altitude due to turbulence. Shortly thereafter we observed a TCASII RA 'monitor vertical speed.' noted traffic on TCASII about 2-3 mi to left front and 300 ft below. RA indicated a pushover. We descended at about 2000 FPM to 4000 ft then climbed back to 5000 ft. Do not know how close we came to traffic.
