Narrative:
We were at FL290 deviating around WX. Center cleared us to deviate right of course and when cleared of WX proceed direct to ama. During this my first officer noticed traffic on the TCASII at the same altitude at 12 O'clock coming straight at us. We followed the TCASII by descending and also turned left to avoid the other aircraft, before the RA. On the TCASII. Center was of not much help by not able to get a timely response and when we did get a response ATC told us to turn right, which would have taken us closer to the other aircraft. We ended up descending 2800 ft to avoid the other aircraft. The location of this was approximately on the ama 330 degree radial at 100 DME.
