Narrative:
#1, left, engine failed in flight. Prior to failure, engine vibration was noted but power and response normal. On approach to clt, and after configuring for 2 engine, normal landing, when power was applied to stabilize speed on approach, excessive vibration occurred, engine did not respond and power loss was experienced. Noted normal windmilling indications with all systems operating. Stabilized on approach, VFR with clearance to land. We declared engine out emergency, reconfigured aircraft for single-engine landing and landed uneventfully. Normal rollout, taxied off runway and had emergency vehicles check for damage or fire. None noted, engine shut down after clearing runway. Taxied to gate. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that the vibration was felt in the throttle quadrant and observed on the engine vibration indicator as well. He depicted the approach and handling of the emergency as a 'no brainer' incident, since the aircraft was so close to the runway. From the symptoms observed and during the post flight inspection the PIC felt that the high stage compressor had suffered an internal failure, blowing out the rear of the engine.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ENG FAILS ON FINAL APCH AFTER EXHIBITING SOME LEVEL OF VIBRATION.
Narrative: #1, L, ENG FAILED IN FLT. PRIOR TO FAILURE, ENG VIBRATION WAS NOTED BUT PWR AND RESPONSE NORMAL. ON APCH TO CLT, AND AFTER CONFIGURING FOR 2 ENG, NORMAL LNDG, WHEN PWR WAS APPLIED TO STABILIZE SPD ON APCH, EXCESSIVE VIBRATION OCCURRED, ENG DID NOT RESPOND AND PWR LOSS WAS EXPERIENCED. NOTED NORMAL WINDMILLING INDICATIONS WITH ALL SYSTEMS OPERATING. STABILIZED ON APCH, VFR WITH CLRNC TO LAND. WE DECLARED ENG OUT EMER, RECONFIGURED ACFT FOR SINGLE-ENG LNDG AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. NORMAL ROLLOUT, TAXIED OFF RWY AND HAD EMER VEHICLES CHK FOR DAMAGE OR FIRE. NONE NOTED, ENG SHUT DOWN AFTER CLRING RWY. TAXIED TO GATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT THE VIBRATION WAS FELT IN THE THROTTLE QUADRANT AND OBSERVED ON THE ENG VIBRATION INDICATOR AS WELL. HE DEPICTED THE APCH AND HANDLING OF THE EMER AS A 'NO BRAINER' INCIDENT, SINCE THE ACFT WAS SO CLOSE TO THE RWY. FROM THE SYMPTOMS OBSERVED AND DURING THE POST FLT INSPECTION THE PIC FELT THAT THE HIGH STAGE COMPRESSOR HAD SUFFERED AN INTERNAL FAILURE, BLOWING OUT THE REAR OF THE ENG.
