Narrative:

Aircraft was taxiing into gate at 3-5 KTS and being directed into gate by ground personnel. Captain indicated left side clear, as was the right from my observations. As the aircraft approached the gate approximately 20-25 ft ground personnel in front of the nose area signal to person on a belt loader to stop the aircraft. Captain then stopped aircraft. Maintenance came on heat set to advise captain that a baggage cart may have brazed the #1 engine cowl. There were no wing walkers in the area to help for wing clearance at the time of occurrence.
