Narrative:

We were on final approach to runway 36 at dca and cleared to land. We were following a dc-9 which was 3 mi ahead. He landed, and we lost sight of him at the far end of the runway. As we landed, I thought I could see the dc-9 still on the runway, but we had already touched down and reversed and spoilers were already deployed. The first officer stopped the aircraft very well, and we cleared the runway well short (2000 ft) of the dc-9's position. He actually was clearing about the same time we did. The tower never said anything about the dc-9 except we were to follow him to the ramp. We taxied in after the dc-9 passed. We should have obviously gone around, had we not assumed the dc-9 had cleared. He was obscured in the red end lights until we were on the ground.

Title: AN ACR MLG CLAIMS THAT HE LANDED ON AN OCCUPIED RWY.

Narrative: WE WERE ON FINAL APCH TO RWY 36 AT DCA AND CLRED TO LAND. WE WERE FOLLOWING A DC-9 WHICH WAS 3 MI AHEAD. HE LANDED, AND WE LOST SIGHT OF HIM AT THE FAR END OF THE RWY. AS WE LANDED, I THOUGHT I COULD SEE THE DC-9 STILL ON THE RWY, BUT WE HAD ALREADY TOUCHED DOWN AND REVERSED AND SPOILERS WERE ALREADY DEPLOYED. THE FO STOPPED THE ACFT VERY WELL, AND WE CLRED THE RWY WELL SHORT (2000 FT) OF THE DC-9'S POS. HE ACTUALLY WAS CLRING ABOUT THE SAME TIME WE DID. THE TWR NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE DC-9 EXCEPT WE WERE TO FOLLOW HIM TO THE RAMP. WE TAXIED IN AFTER THE DC-9 PASSED. WE SHOULD HAVE OBVIOUSLY GONE AROUND, HAD WE NOT ASSUMED THE DC-9 HAD CLRED. HE WAS OBSCURED IN THE RED END LIGHTS UNTIL WE WERE ON THE GND.
