Narrative:
Air carrier Y cleared to taxi from gate to runway 32L, the captain had me doing checklists and I allowed myself to become engrossed in this as the taxi is a short one. Upon looking up I queried my captain as to where she was going. At this time the controller told us to hold our position and later told us to do a 180 degree turn and gave us a clearance to taxi runway 32L, via taxiway east. (The captain had begun a taxi to runway 14). This reporter will, in the future, wait until going the correct direction before doing the taxi checklist and better divide attention between inside and outside the cockpit. Fatigue may have been a factor as it had been a long day. The captain and myself are newly rated capts and I had flown PIC up until this leg, and we swapped for the last 2 legs (approved by company) to help both of us build towards our 100 hours of high minimums time (we were both experienced in the first officer seat) and the lack of availability of an first officer resulted in us flying together.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTION. BEGAN TAXI TO WRONG RWY.
Narrative: ACR Y CLRED TO TAXI FROM GATE TO RWY 32L, THE CAPT HAD ME DOING CHKLISTS AND I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BECOME ENGROSSED IN THIS AS THE TAXI IS A SHORT ONE. UPON LOOKING UP I QUERIED MY CAPT AS TO WHERE SHE WAS GOING. AT THIS TIME THE CTLR TOLD US TO HOLD OUR POS AND LATER TOLD US TO DO A 180 DEG TURN AND GAVE US A CLRNC TO TAXI RWY 32L, VIA TXWY E. (THE CAPT HAD BEGUN A TAXI TO RWY 14). THIS RPTR WILL, IN THE FUTURE, WAIT UNTIL GOING THE CORRECT DIRECTION BEFORE DOING THE TAXI CHKLIST AND BETTER DIVIDE ATTN BTWN INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE COCKPIT. FATIGUE MAY HAVE BEEN A FACTOR AS IT HAD BEEN A LONG DAY. THE CAPT AND MYSELF ARE NEWLY RATED CAPTS AND I HAD FLOWN PIC UP UNTIL THIS LEG, AND WE SWAPPED FOR THE LAST 2 LEGS (APPROVED BY COMPANY) TO HELP BOTH OF US BUILD TOWARDS OUR 100 HRS OF HIGH MINIMUMS TIME (WE WERE BOTH EXPERIENCED IN THE FO SEAT) AND THE LACK OF AVAILABILITY OF AN FO RESULTED IN US FLYING TOGETHER.
