Narrative:
Waiting in line for takeoff at cle, I was told to expect runway 5L. With a long line of aircraft landing on runway 5R, tower cleared me to taxi in position and hold on runway 5R. Even though the tower did not say be ready for an immediate departure, I could see it was tight. So I quickly maneuvered into position on runway 5R. While taxiing into position, I made a passenger announcement and inadvertently hit the communication FLIP-flop, switching me to departure. Maybe 5 seconds elapsed until I realized what I had done. By the time I got the tower back on I could hear the tower issuing a go around to the aircraft preparing to land runway 5R. The tower then had me taxi off the runway for resequencing. Contributing factors: 1) poor audio panel design: old generation gables head without automatic phone/speaker selection when changing transmitters. 2) expected runway 5L, not mentally ready for runway 5R. Let myself get rushed. 3) ATC takeoff sequence was tight. 4) low proficiency with passenger charter. Business represents 20 percent passenger and 80 percent freight. Considerations: 1) slight cold. 2) didn't sleep well night before.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT FAILED TO TKOF WHEN CLRED CAUSING LNDG ACFT TO GAR. LOSS OF RADIO CONTACT.
Narrative: WAITING IN LINE FOR TKOF AT CLE, I WAS TOLD TO EXPECT RWY 5L. WITH A LONG LINE OF ACFT LNDG ON RWY 5R, TWR CLRED ME TO TAXI IN POS AND HOLD ON RWY 5R. EVEN THOUGH THE TWR DID NOT SAY BE READY FOR AN IMMEDIATE DEP, I COULD SEE IT WAS TIGHT. SO I QUICKLY MANEUVERED INTO POS ON RWY 5R. WHILE TAXIING INTO POS, I MADE A PAX ANNOUNCEMENT AND INADVERTENTLY HIT THE COM FLIP-FLOP, SWITCHING ME TO DEP. MAYBE 5 SECONDS ELAPSED UNTIL I REALIZED WHAT I HAD DONE. BY THE TIME I GOT THE TWR BACK ON I COULD HEAR THE TWR ISSUING A GAR TO THE ACFT PREPARING TO LAND RWY 5R. THE TWR THEN HAD ME TAXI OFF THE RWY FOR RESEQUENCING. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) POOR AUDIO PANEL DESIGN: OLD GENERATION GABLES HEAD WITHOUT AUTO PHONE/SPEAKER SELECTION WHEN CHANGING XMITTERS. 2) EXPECTED RWY 5L, NOT MENTALLY READY FOR RWY 5R. LET MYSELF GET RUSHED. 3) ATC TKOF SEQUENCE WAS TIGHT. 4) LOW PROFICIENCY WITH PAX CHARTER. BUSINESS REPRESENTS 20 PERCENT PAX AND 80 PERCENT FREIGHT. CONSIDERATIONS: 1) SLIGHT COLD. 2) DIDN'T SLEEP WELL NIGHT BEFORE.
