Narrative:
In subject aircraft I mistakenly taxied out onto active runway (6R) mistaking it for a taxiway. There is no excuse for this. When in doubt I at least make sure I am taxiing between blue lights not white ones, or if completely at a loss I ask for progressive instructions. When I was on runway 6R I was back-taxiing thus saw the twin on short final and at the same time tower operator said something to the effect of 'and I see we have someone on our active this morning.' the twin went around, I exited the runway. Later I called the tower from elmira, ny, my first stop, and associate said not to worry about it, the twin had not make a report on base, he was supposed to. I am fortunate the tower and other pilot saw me, and that I woke up in time to this terrible error. Of course I apologized on the radio profusely and 4 hours later by phone.
