Narrative:
ZID cleared our flight to cross 35 mi northwest of ind at 11000 ft. We read this back with no questioning by the controller. At approximately 11500 ft controller questioned our altitude and said to maintain 11000 ft. We told him we had been cleared to 11000 ft and had read this back. He said we were only cleared to 15000 ft 35 mi northwest of ind but that 11000 ft would work fine also. He said there was no problem with traffic.
