Narrative:

Departing toronto island airport, the tower asked if we wanted to turn right direct to orillia (NJ4). After turning right, I waited a min or so, then asked if we were to call departure. City tower didn't seem to care 'frequency change approved' or something to that effect. When I contacted approach, they advised us to proceed on course and remain clear of class C airspace and identify. It occurs to me to wonder whether he should have directed us to contact buttonville tower. I was under the impression that he was controling us. Next time, I'm going to fly eastbound and go around the whole area -- the time saved is not worth the confusion. We may have entered buttonville's air traffic area without permission, if the approach controller had said 'remain clear of class C airspace, contact buttonville tower' or even 'remain clear of class C airspace, frequency change approved' it would have been more clear.

Title: SMA PLT MAY HAVE VIOLATED A CANADIAN CLASS C AIRSPACE.

Narrative: DEPARTING TORONTO ISLAND ARPT, THE TWR ASKED IF WE WANTED TO TURN R DIRECT TO ORILLIA (NJ4). AFTER TURNING R, I WAITED A MIN OR SO, THEN ASKED IF WE WERE TO CALL DEP. CITY TWR DIDN'T SEEM TO CARE 'FREQ CHANGE APPROVED' OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT. WHEN I CONTACTED APCH, THEY ADVISED US TO PROCEED ON COURSE AND REMAIN CLR OF CLASS C AIRSPACE AND IDENT. IT OCCURS TO ME TO WONDER WHETHER HE SHOULD HAVE DIRECTED US TO CONTACT BUTTONVILLE TWR. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT HE WAS CTLING US. NEXT TIME, I'M GOING TO FLY EBOUND AND GO AROUND THE WHOLE AREA -- THE TIME SAVED IS NOT WORTH THE CONFUSION. WE MAY HAVE ENTERED BUTTONVILLE'S ATA WITHOUT PERMISSION, IF THE APCH CTLR HAD SAID 'REMAIN CLR OF CLASS C AIRSPACE, CONTACT BUTTONVILLE TWR' OR EVEN 'REMAIN CLR OF CLASS C AIRSPACE, FREQ CHANGE APPROVED' IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CLR.
