Narrative:

During climb, observed right constant speed drive outlet temperature higher than normal and rising. When temperature reached caution range (above 146 degrees C) started APU and transferred right AC bus to APU generator. Shortly thereafter, APU generator failed and AC x-tie locked out. Almost simultaneously, constant speed drive outlet temperature reached red line (163 degrees C) requiring constant speed drive disconnect. When constant speed drive disconnected, lost power to right AC bus. Declared emergency due to possible short on right AC bus. Returned stl, landed approximately 140000 pounds (maximum landing weight 130000 pounds). Landing normal. Maintenance found constant speed drive oversvced, APU generator failed for unknown reason. AC x-tie lockout reset on ground. AC bus ok. Placarded APU generator inoperative, reoriginated flight. Constant speed drive operation normal remainder of flight.

Title: RETURN LAND WITH AN OVERWT LNDG.

Narrative: DURING CLB, OBSERVED R CONSTANT SPD DRIVE OUTLET TEMP HIGHER THAN NORMAL AND RISING. WHEN TEMP REACHED CAUTION RANGE (ABOVE 146 DEGS C) STARTED APU AND TRANSFERRED R AC BUS TO APU GENERATOR. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, APU GENERATOR FAILED AND AC X-TIE LOCKED OUT. ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY, CONSTANT SPD DRIVE OUTLET TEMP REACHED RED LINE (163 DEGS C) REQUIRING CONSTANT SPD DRIVE DISCONNECT. WHEN CONSTANT SPD DRIVE DISCONNECTED, LOST PWR TO R AC BUS. DECLARED EMER DUE TO POSSIBLE SHORT ON R AC BUS. RETURNED STL, LANDED APPROX 140000 LBS (MAX LNDG WT 130000 LBS). LNDG NORMAL. MAINT FOUND CONSTANT SPD DRIVE OVERSVCED, APU GENERATOR FAILED FOR UNKNOWN REASON. AC X-TIE LOCKOUT RESET ON GND. AC BUS OK. PLACARDED APU GENERATOR INOP, REORIGINATED FLT. CONSTANT SPD DRIVE OP NORMAL REMAINDER OF FLT.
