Narrative:
Purposely did not refuel before flight because I wanted to 'test' the next students preflight judgement with low fuel! Lesson went well with this student (about 6 hours total) and decided to move to next lesson plan (not, preflted). Tried his first landing practice at south county. He did very well with about 4-5 full stop taxi backs. Headed for sjc, threw in his first ground ... On way, engine sputtered. Attempted mayday, too low not enough time, prepared immediate landing in (short) 1000 ft dry field along 101 south of golf course, downwind 6 KTS, taxied to house, engine still running, shut down. Left needle showed some fuel, fuel visible in both tank bottoms. Obtained 3 gals of unleaded premium from farm house took off crosswind after taxi 1500 ft check of long field, for 5 mins flight to south county and refueled, return to sjc. Conclusion: too involved in lesson, wasn't checking gas, it finally happened at 6400 hours, the go around to save gas not wise.

OBTAINED 3 GALS OF UNLEADED PREMIUM FROM FARM HOUSE TOOK OFF XWIND AFTER TAXI 1500 FT CHK OF LONG FIELD, FOR 5 MINS FLT TO SOUTH COUNTY AND REFUELED, RETURN TO SJC.
