Narrative:
First officer flying (me) the dudes 8 departure, out of smf to den, on the 120 degree heading, speed restr to 230 KTS, assigned 11000 ft altitude per clearance (pre departure clearance). Just about to intercept the sac 058 degree radial, received 'resume normal speed' and a new frequency to ZOA. Turning and speeding up went right through 11000 ft to 11300 ft. Started back down to 11000 ft then received clearance to climb to FL230. Autothrottles were also inoperative. Not excuses but possible other contributing factors: at hotel my neighbors in the next room woke me up with their laughing and talking. It was before breakfast, a little hungry. On my period, some pain, before aspirin since no food yet. Supplemental information from acn 322872: first officer was hand flying with autothrottle inoperative. While I was switching frequencys first officer was making turn-on to intercept 058 degree radial and level off. Overshot cleared altitude of 11000 ft to approximately 11300 ft. During the departure briefing we had discussed the 12000 ft crossing restr at dudes, but I don't believe that was a factor. Primarily I think it was due to many things occurring simultaneously and the large power reduction required manually due to inoperative autothrottles.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALTDEV DURING CLBOUT.
Narrative: FO FLYING (ME) THE DUDES 8 DEP, OUT OF SMF TO DEN, ON THE 120 DEG HDG, SPD RESTR TO 230 KTS, ASSIGNED 11000 FT ALT PER CLRNC (PDC). JUST ABOUT TO INTERCEPT THE SAC 058 DEG RADIAL, RECEIVED 'RESUME NORMAL SPD' AND A NEW FREQ TO ZOA. TURNING AND SPDING UP WENT RIGHT THROUGH 11000 FT TO 11300 FT. STARTED BACK DOWN TO 11000 FT THEN RECEIVED CLRNC TO CLB TO FL230. AUTOTHROTTLES WERE ALSO INOP. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 322872: FO WAS HAND FLYING WITH AUTOTHROTTLE INOP. WHILE I WAS SWITCHING FREQS FO WAS MAKING TURN-ON TO INTERCEPT 058 DEG RADIAL AND LEVEL OFF. OVERSHOT CLRED ALT OF 11000 FT TO APPROX 11300 FT. DURING THE DEP BRIEFING WE HAD DISCUSSED THE 12000 FT XING RESTR AT DUDES, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WAS A FACTOR. PRIMARILY I THINK IT WAS DUE TO MANY THINGS OCCURRING SIMULTANEOUSLY AND THE LARGE PWR REDUCTION REQUIRED MANUALLY DUE TO INOP AUTOTHROTTLES.
