Narrative:
Did not hear a 'hold short' regarding inactive runway (9) after landing runway 21R, exiting active and proceeding in on parallel toward terminal. First officer realized we were given 'hold short' but too late. Ground cleared us to continue, said 'no problem.' we proceeded to gate. Dtw poorly marked airport. Very difficult taxi because of layout and congestion plus radio clutter. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that since there was another air carrier aircraft coming out of the ramp area that he believed that he was going to, it distracted his attention from the taxiway signs and markings. However, since he is so used to observing the red runway signage, he thought after coming into the runway to which he was instructed to hold, that there had not been a sign. He restated that he and the first officer had not been to the airport in a long time and could not remember the exact layout.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF AN MLG FAILED TO HOLD SHORT AS INSTRUCTED DURING TAXI TO PARKING AFTER LNDG.
Narrative: DID NOT HEAR A 'HOLD SHORT' REGARDING INACTIVE RWY (9) AFTER LNDG RWY 21R, EXITING ACTIVE AND PROCEEDING IN ON PARALLEL TOWARD TERMINAL. FO REALIZED WE WERE GIVEN 'HOLD SHORT' BUT TOO LATE. GND CLRED US TO CONTINUE, SAID 'NO PROB.' WE PROCEEDED TO GATE. DTW POORLY MARKED ARPT. VERY DIFFICULT TAXI BECAUSE OF LAYOUT AND CONGESTION PLUS RADIO CLUTTER. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT SINCE THERE WAS ANOTHER ACR ACFT COMING OUT OF THE RAMP AREA THAT HE BELIEVED THAT HE WAS GOING TO, IT DISTRACTED HIS ATTN FROM THE TXWY SIGNS AND MARKINGS. HOWEVER, SINCE HE IS SO USED TO OBSERVING THE RED RWY SIGNAGE, HE THOUGHT AFTER COMING INTO THE RWY TO WHICH HE WAS INSTRUCTED TO HOLD, THAT THERE HAD NOT BEEN A SIGN. HE RESTATED THAT HE AND THE FO HAD NOT BEEN TO THE ARPT IN A LONG TIME AND COULD NOT REMEMBER THE EXACT LAYOUT.
