Narrative:
Altitude alerter problem, plus altitude would not capture. In the confusion altitude gain of 400 ft before we arrested it. Center advised the same time we caught it. We were also being cleared direct to SOP at the same time. GPS is in pedestal on center console. Attention to that caused our inattn to the climb just long enough.

Title: CAPT OF AN SMT TURBOPROP OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT DURING THE CLB AS A RESULT OF DISTR WITH THE GPS. THE ALT ALERTER WAS MALFUNCTIONING AND THE AUTOPLT FAILED TO CAPTURE THE ALT. ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT.
Narrative: ALT ALERTER PROB, PLUS ALT WOULD NOT CAPTURE. IN THE CONFUSION ALT GAIN OF 400 FT BEFORE WE ARRESTED IT. CTR ADVISED THE SAME TIME WE CAUGHT IT. WE WERE ALSO BEING CLRED DIRECT TO SOP AT THE SAME TIME. GPS IS IN PEDESTAL ON CTR CONSOLE. ATTN TO THAT CAUSED OUR INATTN TO THE CLB JUST LONG ENOUGH.
