Narrative:
After fueling the airplane at 42J I departed runway 22 for 28J. I had entered a direct course to 28J in my garmin 196. After takeoff I turned crosswind and then downwind at 42J. I planned on leaving the pattern to head for 28J. When I looked at the GPS the map was not working in the correct format which is moving up the display. I assume the unit lost satellite contact. With the distraction of the GPS operating incorrectly; I may have flown into restricted airspace R2903A. I cannot be sure. As I flew over a small lake; I realized I was headed northeast and I made a right turn to the south. The lake was sand hill lake. The problem with the GPS caused a distraction and I lost situational awareness of where the aircraft was relative to the airport; the restricted airspace; my course; and I may have strayed unintentionally into restricted airspace. Contributing factor: first time to this airport.

Title: PLT OF TB20 DISTR BY THE MALFUNCTIONING GPS NAV SYSTEM MAY HAVE ENTERED RESTRICTED AREA R2903A.
Narrative: AFTER FUELING THE AIRPLANE AT 42J I DEPARTED RWY 22 FOR 28J. I HAD ENTERED A DIRECT COURSE TO 28J IN MY GARMIN 196. AFTER TKOF I TURNED XWIND AND THEN DOWNWIND AT 42J. AS I FLEW OVER A SMALL LAKE; I REALIZED I WAS HEADED NE AND I MADE A R TURN TO THE S. THE LAKE WAS SAND HILL LAKE. THE PROBLEM WITH THE GPS CAUSED A DISTRACTION AND I LOST SITUATIONAL AWARENESS OF WHERE THE ACFT WAS RELATIVE TO THE ARPT; THE RESTRICTED AIRSPACE; MY COURSE; AND I MAY HAVE STRAYED UNINTENTIONALLY INTO RESTRICTED AIRSPACE. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: FIRST TIME TO THIS ARPT.
