Narrative:
For the second time the ATIS only stated charted visuals to runways 28. We can't brief this approach if we don't know we may get it. At least this time we were told by bay approach when we checked in that we would get the bay ILS runway 28L. We then briefed that approach as we were vectored clear to santa cruz and back. As we were approaching the localizer with another aircraft 2 mi on our left and abeam us we were told 'change to and cleared for lda DME runway 28R.' not only did we not have time to brief the approach or set it up on the FMC, we nearly flew through the localizer while scrambling to find the lda frequency and inbound course. As we rolled out on the lda we were directly abeam the aircraft on the bay ILS runway 28L and stayed that way to touchdown. It would help greatly if they would put on the ATIS that they are using these approachs. It would give us time to brief them both, since every time I have been assigned one of these, it has been within 1 min of crossing the lda.
