Narrative:

First officer was given descent to cross 40 mi northwest of pvd at FL240. Out of about FL270, aircraft started to level off for no apparent reason. Proper inputs were in FMC. I told first officer that the aircraft was leveling off and to increase descent manually. The first officer then intervened and we were very close to the correct altitude, but possibly a little bit past.
