Being vectored for approach to runway 30L stl. Cleared to 8000 ft. Autoplt in use. Failed to capture preselected altitude. Descended to 7500 ft before corrective action completed. Don't know if altitude was armed properly or if select knob was inadvertently moved. High rate of descent precluded earlier leveloff manually.
