Narrative:
Just checked in with lga approach. TCASII issued an advisory and immediately issued an RA to descend. The captain disconnected the autoplt and established a 3000 FPM descent (negative G approximately half). I pulled up the traffic page on my multi-function display and noticed that the intruder aircraft had also initiated a descent. I advised the captain and he increased the descent rate. I continued looking for the aircraft visually and spotted it for approximately 2 seconds as it flew overhead very close. It ws a falcon bizjet. ATC never advised us of the traffic. After letting the controller know about our 1000 ft deviation from his clearance, he told us to remain at 10000 ft. I believe the TCASII was extremely valuable in this situation and the outcome would have been questionable without it. This is because the aircraft could not be seen until the last min. When the intruder aircraft was seen there was no time to react.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MDT JET ON THE MINKS 1 ARR RECEIVED A TCASII RA AND DSNDED OUT OF HIS ASSIGNED ALT OVER SOMTO INTXN AND SAW A CPR FALCON JET PASS OVERHEAD IN CLOSE PROX. FALCON JET WAS ALSO IN A DSCNT. NO TFC INFO GIVEN BY APCH CTLR.
Narrative: JUST CHKED IN WITH LGA APCH. TCASII ISSUED AN ADVISORY AND IMMEDIATELY ISSUED AN RA TO DSND. THE CAPT DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND ESTABLISHED A 3000 FPM DSCNT (NEGATIVE G APPROX HALF). I PULLED UP THE TFC PAGE ON MY MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY AND NOTICED THAT THE INTRUDER ACFT HAD ALSO INITIATED A DSCNT. I ADVISED THE CAPT AND HE INCREASED THE DSCNT RATE. I CONTINUED LOOKING FOR THE ACFT VISUALLY AND SPOTTED IT FOR APPROX 2 SECONDS AS IT FLEW OVERHEAD VERY CLOSE. IT WS A FALCON BIZJET. ATC NEVER ADVISED US OF THE TFC. AFTER LETTING THE CTLR KNOW ABOUT OUR 1000 FT DEV FROM HIS CLRNC, HE TOLD US TO REMAIN AT 10000 FT. I BELIEVE THE TCASII WAS EXTREMELY VALUABLE IN THIS SIT AND THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN QUESTIONABLE WITHOUT IT. THIS IS BECAUSE THE ACFT COULD NOT BE SEEN UNTIL THE LAST MIN. WHEN THE INTRUDER ACFT WAS SEEN THERE WAS NO TIME TO REACT.
