Narrative:
We were on arrival into fll level at 6000 ft approximately 20 mi northwest of the airport when traffic was seen on the TCASII at 12 O'clock and approximately 4-5 mi, 500 ft below. All 3 of us began looking for the traffic. Then approximately 3-4 mi away the TCASII indicated the traffic was climbing, which was followed by a TA. We were still searching for the traffic, but did not see it. At approximately 2 mi away and 300 ft below us and climbing, we received a TCASII RA, which commanded a 1500 FPM climb. At this point I took control of the aircraft from the first officer, disengaged the autoplt and initiated a climb. The first officer advised ATC we were climbing for a TCASII RA, they responded we had VFR traffic 500 ft below us. We advised them the traffic had climbed into us. I believe the traffic passed beneath us by approximately 100-200 ft and less than 1 mi away. We descended back to 6000 ft after receiving 'clear of conflict' TCASII advisory. Top of deviation was 6900 ft. Supplemental information from acn 358373: we advised ATC and then he pointed out traffic. We found traffic then we saw it -- a cessna.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 ON ARR FLL MAINTAINING 6000 FT, TCASII SHOWED TFC 12 O'CLOCK, 4 MI, 500 FT BELOW. AT 2 MI, GOT TCASII RA TO CLB AT 1500 FPM. CAPT TOOK ACFT AND EXECUTED THE CLB MANUALLY. SAW TFC WHEN THE ACFT HAD REACHED 6900 FT -- CESSNA. RPTR DSNDED TO 6000 FT WHEN CLR OF TFC.
Narrative: WE WERE ON ARR INTO FLL LEVEL AT 6000 FT APPROX 20 MI NW OF THE ARPT WHEN TFC WAS SEEN ON THE TCASII AT 12 O'CLOCK AND APPROX 4-5 MI, 500 FT BELOW. ALL 3 OF US BEGAN LOOKING FOR THE TFC. THEN APPROX 3-4 MI AWAY THE TCASII INDICATED THE TFC WAS CLBING, WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY A TA. WE WERE STILL SEARCHING FOR THE TFC, BUT DID NOT SEE IT. AT APPROX 2 MI AWAY AND 300 FT BELOW US AND CLBING, WE RECEIVED A TCASII RA, WHICH COMMANDED A 1500 FPM CLB. AT THIS POINT I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT FROM THE FO, DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT AND INITIATED A CLB. THE FO ADVISED ATC WE WERE CLBING FOR A TCASII RA, THEY RESPONDED WE HAD VFR TFC 500 FT BELOW US. WE ADVISED THEM THE TFC HAD CLBED INTO US. I BELIEVE THE TFC PASSED BENEATH US BY APPROX 100-200 FT AND LESS THAN 1 MI AWAY. WE DSNDED BACK TO 6000 FT AFTER RECEIVING 'CLR OF CONFLICT' TCASII ADVISORY. TOP OF DEV WAS 6900 FT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 358373: WE ADVISED ATC AND THEN HE POINTED OUT TFC. WE FOUND TFC THEN WE SAW IT -- A CESSNA.
