Narrative:

Prior to departure, a flight attendant jump seat became inoperative. I inquired via data link if this item could be legally deferred. Maintenance replied it could and sent the conditions necessary for compliance to crew via data link. We complied and departed, to learn later maintenance had not deferred jump seat, but had only advised us it could be done. I have communicated to my flight operations supervisor the need for absolute clarity from maintenance on any actions taken/not taken.
