Narrative:
I was PNF, I was working the radios. Cleared for visual approach at airport I've never been to, was told to switch to local controller on right base. As I was anticipating taxi instructions after landing. I did not FLIP up tower frequency after I set it in standby position. Landed without clearance. Contributing factors were change in anticipated runway at last min, new to the airplane, new to pit. Discovered my error when tower didn't clear us over to ground after landing. I then checked my landing lights (memory aid for landing clrncs) -- was not on. Later I called local controller. He informed me that he cleared us for landing 2 or 3 times but got no readback. Also said there was no conflicting traffic at the time. In the future I will be more 'heads up' when going to new airports. Maybe study all taxi options prior to operating at unfamiliar airports! Also, PF called for gear down after tower frequency was set in standby and prior to me flipping frequency up to active -- was distraction at a critical time of flying the aircraft. We had our priorities straight (aviate first!) but forgot to communicate. (Last round trip of 3 day trip=fatigue!)
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DH8 FLC LANDS AT PIT WITHOUT OBTAINING LNDG CLRNC. RPTRS CITE FIRST TIME INTO ARPT AND SOME DISTRS.
Narrative: I WAS PNF, I WAS WORKING THE RADIOS. CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH AT ARPT I'VE NEVER BEEN TO, WAS TOLD TO SWITCH TO LCL CTLR ON R BASE. AS I WAS ANTICIPATING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS AFTER LNDG. I DID NOT FLIP UP TWR FREQ AFTER I SET IT IN STANDBY POS. LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE CHANGE IN ANTICIPATED RWY AT LAST MIN, NEW TO THE AIRPLANE, NEW TO PIT. DISCOVERED MY ERROR WHEN TWR DIDN'T CLR US OVER TO GND AFTER LNDG. I THEN CHKED MY LNDG LIGHTS (MEMORY AID FOR LNDG CLRNCS) -- WAS NOT ON. LATER I CALLED LCL CTLR. HE INFORMED ME THAT HE CLRED US FOR LNDG 2 OR 3 TIMES BUT GOT NO READBACK. ALSO SAID THERE WAS NO CONFLICTING TFC AT THE TIME. IN THE FUTURE I WILL BE MORE 'HEADS UP' WHEN GOING TO NEW ARPTS. MAYBE STUDY ALL TAXI OPTIONS PRIOR TO OPERATING AT UNFAMILIAR ARPTS! ALSO, PF CALLED FOR GEAR DOWN AFTER TWR FREQ WAS SET IN STANDBY AND PRIOR TO ME FLIPPING FREQ UP TO ACTIVE -- WAS DISTR AT A CRITICAL TIME OF FLYING THE ACFT. WE HAD OUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT (AVIATE FIRST!) BUT FORGOT TO COMMUNICATE. (LAST ROUND TRIP OF 3 DAY TRIP=FATIGUE!)
