Narrative:

Climbed through assigned altitude of 3000 ft by 300 ft. Altitude alerter warning sounded at 3200 ft and aircraft was level at 3300 ft and an immediate return to 3000 ft was accomplished. Normal leveloff not accomplished due to failure of '300 ft to go' call being missed and preoccupation with looking for traffic called out by ATC. Could have been avoided by more vigilant instrument scan by PF while PNF looked for the traffic.
