Narrative:
As I turned left onto the centerline of gate X from the east side of ramp, I noticed the area to be clear and 3 marshallers giving the clear signal and the green traffic showing. I requested first officer shut down the left engine since we would be deplaning through the mid door on the left side. As we were approaching the stop point the yellow traffic light came on and the aircraft lost forward momentum and stopped. With the yellow light still showing, I added power on the right engine to continue taxiing. Shortly after the aircraft started to move, the red light came on and I stopped the aircraft. As I was leaving the aircraft, ground personnel informed me that the jetway had been contacted with the left engine. I checked the nose gear and it was on centerline about 1 ft ahead of the stop line. I can only conclude that when the aircraft lost forward momentum the jetway operator moved the jetway to the aircraft and the marshaller did not see that and directed me to continue taxiing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 STRUCK A JETWAY WHILE BEING GUIDED ON TO A GATE INCURRING DAMAGE TO THE L ENG INLET COWL.
Narrative: AS I TURNED L ONTO THE CTRLINE OF GATE X FROM THE E SIDE OF RAMP, I NOTICED THE AREA TO BE CLR AND 3 MARSHALLERS GIVING THE CLR SIGNAL AND THE GREEN TFC SHOWING. I REQUESTED FO SHUT DOWN THE L ENG SINCE WE WOULD BE DEPLANING THROUGH THE MID DOOR ON THE L SIDE. AS WE WERE APCHING THE STOP POINT THE YELLOW TFC LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ACFT LOST FORWARD MOMENTUM AND STOPPED. WITH THE YELLOW LIGHT STILL SHOWING, I ADDED PWR ON THE R ENG TO CONTINUE TAXIING. SHORTLY AFTER THE ACFT STARTED TO MOVE, THE RED LIGHT CAME ON AND I STOPPED THE ACFT. AS I WAS LEAVING THE ACFT, GND PERSONNEL INFORMED ME THAT THE JETWAY HAD BEEN CONTACTED WITH THE L ENG. I CHKED THE NOSE GEAR AND IT WAS ON CTRLINE ABOUT 1 FT AHEAD OF THE STOP LINE. I CAN ONLY CONCLUDE THAT WHEN THE ACFT LOST FORWARD MOMENTUM THE JETWAY OPERATOR MOVED THE JETWAY TO THE ACFT AND THE MARSHALLER DID NOT SEE THAT AND DIRECTED ME TO CONTINUE TAXIING.
