Narrative:
While flying a present position hold at FL350 en route to atlanta from newburgh, ny, encountered embedded thunderstorm at north end of holding pattern. We were nearly overhead the hmv VOR. The radar was tuned up. We were in and out of tops. We popped out while in a turn at north end of holding pattern, saw distinct cell. We flew into the southern edge of cell, got abrupt left wing up 90 degrees. Autoplt kicked off. We knifed down 2000 ft while rolling wings level and generally regaining control. I called center, told them we were at FL330, getting out of thunderstorm. He cleared us to do what we had to do to remedy situation. We shortly exited cell, told center we were on our way back up to FL350. Asked for new holding fix to the south, which we got. No injuries. No traffic conflict. No damage. Remainder of flight uneventful.
