Narrative:

East of djb inbound to dtw at FL310 we were given a clearance to FL280 and then given traffic at 12 O'clock, 30 mi at FL280. I commented to the first officer that we were also cleared to FL280. He agreed and we decided it must be crossing traffic. We were at the proper altitude for direction of flight and assumed the controller knew what he was doing. After leveling at FL280 I saw the traffic at a slight left to right crossing angle and closing. We weren't on a collision course, but it looked closer than normal. About that time we got an RA on the TCASII and followed it. Simultaneously ATC told us to climb to FL290 and turn left. The traffic passed at approximately 5 mi left to right and we were then cleared back to FL280. In the future, when I discuss a situation like this with the first officer, I will also discuss it with ATC.

Title: RPTED EVASIVE ACTION BY ACR F100 IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA ON A B747 AT THE SAME ALT ON A XING COURSE.

Narrative: E OF DJB INBOUND TO DTW AT FL310 WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO FL280 AND THEN GIVEN TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK, 30 MI AT FL280. I COMMENTED TO THE FO THAT WE WERE ALSO CLRED TO FL280. HE AGREED AND WE DECIDED IT MUST BE XING TFC. WE WERE AT THE PROPER ALT FOR DIRECTION OF FLT AND ASSUMED THE CTLR KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING. AFTER LEVELING AT FL280 I SAW THE TFC AT A SLIGHT L TO R XING ANGLE AND CLOSING. WE WEREN'T ON A COLLISION COURSE, BUT IT LOOKED CLOSER THAN NORMAL. ABOUT THAT TIME WE GOT AN RA ON THE TCASII AND FOLLOWED IT. SIMULTANEOUSLY ATC TOLD US TO CLB TO FL290 AND TURN L. THE TFC PASSED AT APPROX 5 MI L TO R AND WE WERE THEN CLRED BACK TO FL280. IN THE FUTURE, WHEN I DISCUSS A SIT LIKE THIS WITH THE FO, I WILL ALSO DISCUSS IT WITH ATC.
