Narrative:
I was cleared RNAV direct to an intersection, then follow the victor airway to the VOR. I used LORAN to get to the intersection. When LORAN said I was there, the VOR said I wasn't. I chose to follow the VOR indication believing it would be more accurate. My RNAV receiver was in RNAV mode when I thought it was in VOR mode. I flew off course. The controller had to correct me. Cause: lack of experience with RNAV.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PA23-250 PLT WAS CLRED RNAV DIRECT. RPTR USED LORAN TO IDENT THE INTXN, BUT VOR DIDN'T AGREE WITH LORAN. RPTR HAD THE RNAV SELECTED ON THE LORAN RECEIVER INSTEAD OF THE VOR. WHEN HE FOLLOWED THE LORAN THE ACFT WAS STILL OFF COURSE UNTIL THE CTLR INTERVENED AND GAVE A VECTOR.
