Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi on taxiway D to taxiway north, hold short of runway 25 on taxiway north. We inadvertently taxied past taxiway north and across runway 16/34, which was closed at the time. We then requested clearance back to taxiway north. Factors leading up to this were fatigue due to all night cargo operation, being the first night back to work, and lack of proper cockpit vigilance. Supplemental information from acn 405380: the captain said he had been flying out of this airport during the previous month and that he was 'familiar' with the taxiway layout. I was reviewing our departure routing and did not notice that the captain had passed intersection north as well as runway 16/34, which is immediately past intersection north. Fortunately, the runway we crossed without clearance was closed. The ground controller had seen us pass intersection north, but was unable to prevent us from crossing runway 16/34 due to radio traffic and our excessive speed. Contributing factors include: 1) extensive airport construction which created unfamiliarity. 2) excessive taxi speed. 3) in-cockpit distrs which should have waited.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC8 CAPT TAXIED ACROSS RWY WHEN HE WAS TOLD TO HOLD SHORT.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI ON TXWY D TO TXWY N, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 25 ON TXWY N. WE INADVERTENTLY TAXIED PAST TXWY N AND ACROSS RWY 16/34, WHICH WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME. WE THEN REQUESTED CLRNC BACK TO TXWY N. FACTORS LEADING UP TO THIS WERE FATIGUE DUE TO ALL NIGHT CARGO OP, BEING THE FIRST NIGHT BACK TO WORK, AND LACK OF PROPER COCKPIT VIGILANCE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 405380: THE CAPT SAID HE HAD BEEN FLYING OUT OF THIS ARPT DURING THE PREVIOUS MONTH AND THAT HE WAS 'FAMILIAR' WITH THE TXWY LAYOUT. I WAS REVIEWING OUR DEP ROUTING AND DID NOT NOTICE THAT THE CAPT HAD PASSED INTXN N AS WELL AS RWY 16/34, WHICH IS IMMEDIATELY PAST INTXN N. FORTUNATELY, THE RWY WE CROSSED WITHOUT CLRNC WAS CLOSED. THE GND CTLR HAD SEEN US PASS INTXN N, BUT WAS UNABLE TO PREVENT US FROM XING RWY 16/34 DUE TO RADIO TFC AND OUR EXCESSIVE SPD. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS INCLUDE: 1) EXTENSIVE ARPT CONSTRUCTION WHICH CREATED UNFAMILIARITY. 2) EXCESSIVE TAXI SPD. 3) IN-COCKPIT DISTRS WHICH SHOULD HAVE WAITED.
