Narrative:
Cleared runway 28R on taxiway a. Contacted ground, clearance was taxiway a, taxiway M to the gate. Taxiway a crosses runway 14/32 at the end. Upon crossing runway 14/32 we noticed an aircraft with landing lights on. Upon clearing runway 14, other aircraft rotated. Separation was at least 2500 ft. Recontacted ground. We read back our clearance. Then first officer said that was correct, taxiway a, taxiway M to the gate. That is when we asked 'what about that airplane that just took off.' they came back and said that they would take care of it. Never was there a hold short of runway 14/32. There was no readback of 'hold short.' problem was unable to see an aircraft on runway 32 from taxiway a due to distance and slope of airport property. Aircraft become visible on takeoff roll at midfield, at a 90 degree angle, therefore unable to verify motion. Lesson learned. Always get a clearance to cross any runway, active or not.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AFTER LNDG, AN FK100 WAS CLRED BY GND CTL TO THE TERMINAL GATE. THE ROUTING ISSUED CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY WHERE A BA41 DEPARTED OVER THE TOP OF THE FK100.
Narrative: CLRED RWY 28R ON TXWY A. CONTACTED GND, CLRNC WAS TXWY A, TXWY M TO THE GATE. TXWY A CROSSES RWY 14/32 AT THE END. UPON XING RWY 14/32 WE NOTICED AN ACFT WITH LNDG LIGHTS ON. UPON CLRING RWY 14, OTHER ACFT ROTATED. SEPARATION WAS AT LEAST 2500 FT. RECONTACTED GND. WE READ BACK OUR CLRNC. THEN FO SAID THAT WAS CORRECT, TXWY A, TXWY M TO THE GATE. THAT IS WHEN WE ASKED 'WHAT ABOUT THAT AIRPLANE THAT JUST TOOK OFF.' THEY CAME BACK AND SAID THAT THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. NEVER WAS THERE A HOLD SHORT OF RWY 14/32. THERE WAS NO READBACK OF 'HOLD SHORT.' PROB WAS UNABLE TO SEE AN ACFT ON RWY 32 FROM TXWY A DUE TO DISTANCE AND SLOPE OF ARPT PROPERTY. ACFT BECOME VISIBLE ON TKOF ROLL AT MIDFIELD, AT A 90 DEG ANGLE, THEREFORE UNABLE TO VERIFY MOTION. LESSON LEARNED. ALWAYS GET A CLRNC TO CROSS ANY RWY, ACTIVE OR NOT.
